  • Fruit Towers

I have decided in my small space that I want more fruit, I have seen what are called agro towers in the USA - and want to find something similar in the UK for strawberries. I want to go up to about 5' - so conventional flower towers are out as they tend tobe 17". Anyone know of anywhere in the UK that does tall strawberry towers, similar to agro, or does anyone have a suggestion? This will be permanently sited.

Ken muir does strawberry tower pots, not sure how permanent they are but i know they gan be stacked pretty high (he uses them to display in at Chelsea). www.kenmuir.co.uk

there has been some work done on the strawberry towers you mention for commercial growers in the UK - i'm sure i saw an article about them a while ago - i would imagine they would be quite expensive and perhaps not available to amateurs yet, but i may be wrong.

A plastic water butt is quite tall. Woudn't be much of a problem to cut holes out with a hot knife (possibly using a hot air stripper to heat the knife?)
If you gently heated under each hole and levered it out a bit it would give planting pockets as well. Then all you need is a perforated drainpipe for the centre, fill with compost and jobs a guddun! Just a thought!

I have just got 2 plant-a-towers for my strawberrys from ferndale lodge, they are selling them with £10 off. Don't know if these would be any good to you but I was really pleased with them.

          strawberry towers

I saw Ken Muir'e strawberry tower whilst watching Chelsea on tele. What a wonderful idea especially in a small plot. I have been searching Ken Muir's web page to see if they are for sale, no luck as yet. As for how long they would last is another question, probably a very expensive item too >> Thinking cap required and some ingenuity me thinks..... Anyone got any ideas be delighted to hear of them

Not see anything like the agro over here.

My strawberry plants grow very well in a polanter they come in differents sizes I brought mine at half price.

Snadger I'm liking the way you think!! I have a couple of plastic bins that I want to cut the tops off and have been trying to think how! That heated knife trick may do it.

My son has been promising to make me a spiral herb garden, not sure if this would work for your fruit tower or not. I'll ask him where he saw the idea.
No, sorry he tells me he heard about it at the Permaculture TAFE day. I expect you could google the idea anyways.
