I've started a new thread to the other that is live at the moment because my question is similar but slightly different.
We've had both summer and autumn varieties in different beds and always removed any stem that had fruited or died on both varieties.
Two years ago I cleared the summer ones as a blackcurrant, gooseberry and loganberry bush had taken over that bed and extended the other bed and planted an extra 18 autumn fruiting varieties.
Last year we had a good crop in autumn as expected. However we never got round to ANY pruning and this year the bed has been a jungle with the new growth.
We've had masses of raspberries off the plants in this bed over the last two months (much earlier than I expected) and we have now pruned out all the stems that had fruited. Looking at the plants now we have all this year's new growth left and they are just starting to fruit, about the time I would expect autumn fruiting ones to fruit.
My confusion/question is "where did the stems that have summer fruited come from?".
My only explanation is that the stems that fruited last autumn and didn't get pruned have fruited a second time this summer... is this possible? If it is I'll leave this year's autumn fruiting stems for next year as well!
