Hi everyone,
I am actually currently growing cherry trees (and more) in Reykjavik, Iceland, but having lived in Aberdeen for a few years previously, I feel the weather isn't too different. We get a bit more snow here during parts of the winter and we are a bit worse for spring frosts, as well as having a slightly shorter summer, which is usually a few degrees colder as well.
So I was wondering, those of you growing cherries in Scotland (for instance Aberdeen) or possibly it is similar in N-England as well, but I don't know that well enough, is your experience that it goes quite well, or that you need all kinds of precautions etc just to make it bear fruit?
The reason I'm asking here is partly because there isn't much expertise here in Iceland yet regarding fruit trees (although we are currently building up that experience ).
Also,
I think my Sunburst cherry may have canker. The summer we got it, there was a cold spell and we saw a little bit of ooze from it. However it's growth was good. Since then, growth has been quite good (although hardly any flowering and no fruit yet) but this summer has been so very very wet (hello Aberdeen ) that we saw a little bit of the ooze (I'm sure there's a better, proper word for it..) earlier in the summer and now last couple of weeks it seems to be back with a vengeance. I will try to post some photos.
The main advice I have gotten over here, is that since the growth of the tree is still good, (new branches, leaves, thickening of trunk etc) I shouldn't worry too much and just try to improve the surrounding area (improve drainage further, protect it better over winter and see if I can reduce any wind coming through even further). But I'm wondering if any of you have had the same problems and how you dealt with it.
Generally speaking it gets quite a bit of sun where it is, there's really not much wind that gets through and the drainage is, well, decent. Although I improved the soil quite a bit upon planting (3 years ago), the garden soil here is rather heavy and often a bit moist, possibly from being not too far from a small lake.
All advice, suggestions and general info greatly appreciated
Cheers,
Kris
