We planted a mixed hedge 2 years ago. It was the "Pierre" hedge , a nice mixture, all doing well and no losses. We also mixed in some Hornbeam.

      gooseberry

Wild Gooseberries are vigorous enough to grow in a hedge [they can reach 5-6 ft] and supply small green fruit suitable for cooking. I would give a try to the Chokeberry, latin name Aronia which grows well in this country as long as the soil isn't alkaline, the Golden Currant Ribes Odoratum produces clove scented flowers in spring followed by edible berries and is not too big. hope these are of help.
