  • Can anyone tell me what my vine is doing

My Grapevine is doing fantastic, has fruit set on it and they are swelling at a nice rate.

The vine is in perfect health and is recieving fortnightly doses of a spray to prevent mould and mildew as well as a range of fungal diseases.

One of the branches on the vine, which I have let go a bit wild this year (in prep for some crafty pruning for next year ) has some growth on it that looks like it is trying to send roots out.

This is all going on about 20cms from the floor.

Can anyone tell me if the vine is indeed sending roots out and wether I could remove this branch and propogate a new vine from it

or indeed it is something wrong.

They looks like roots to me, and I don't think there would be any harm done by cutting this shoot off and popping it into a potting medium, ideally something containing a good proportion of sharp sand which is free-draining.

Vines are quite easy to propogate from cuttings, though why this one is doing this I'm not sure. Is the area around it a bit moist, or perhaps a splash of mud landed nearby.

Is there a break in the vine at that point? It's hard to tell from the photo, but if there is, it could be the plants defence mechanism kicking in by forming its own set of roots and forming a callus at the break? Just a guess!
