  • Can I cut blackberries right back?

I have taken on an over grown allotment, and there are blackberry bushes that have clearly been planted rather than having invaded, and I would like to keep them. However they have run wild a bit, so can I cut them right back and re-train them from next year, or would I just kill them off by pruning too hard? Thanks for any advice.

They will definitely grow back. They can be cut right back, especially time of year, when they're about to be dormant, and will send up new growth in spring.

Good luck with the clearing! And welcome to the forum.

Almost impossible to kill! However if you cut it all back you'll get no fruit next year as they fruit on second year canes. If you cut out the old wood which has already fruited then perhaps you'd be able to train this years growth and be cropping next year.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
