  • Ants and pears?

I've been picking up pear windfalls and some of them are covered with ants!

a few look like slugs have had a go at them....could the ants be sampling the actual fruit?....or could it be the ants and not the slugs which made the shallow holes in the fruit?

the pears are quite firm and certainly not rotting

just wondering cos there must have been over 100 ants on the pears over about a meter of ground under an espaliered pear tree. And no, it's not on an ants nest.

Could be slugs, could be ants, could be wasps, could be all 3! Everything goes somewhat crazy at this time of year, at the end of the cycle, feasting on nature's abundance.
Pain is still pain, suffering is still suffering, regardless of whoever, or whatever, is the victim.

It just never occurred to me that ants would actually make the holes (?)...more that they were opportunist feeders , spotting a ready made hole and getting stuck in???

I think slugs (or other bugs - including moth/sawfly 'maggots' of varying types, earwigs, wasps, birds and possibly woodlice) make the holes and ants are attracted once they can get to the juicy flesh.

I think ants are only guilty of 'farming' (and moving around) aphids.
