Hi
ive recently ordered two pear trees, both 1year old, bare root, quince c rootstock, one is concorde and the other beurre hardy. I was planning to train both as fans along the side of my plot as a boudary, the space is roughly 5m.
Ive been reading a lot in the books I have/ online and im finding there is conflicting info, geoff hamilton saying that training/ pruning fan pear trees is tricky and espalier is better, but to me this looks a lot more prep in terms of building a structure etc and what I really want is as little fuss as possible.
I am now thinking that I might train one as a step over and one as a fan (fan without support or stake)?.
Any comment / experience of this would be really welcome as I dont want to waste the poor little trees!
Other info, They will be in a london allotment which is fairly sheltered and gets a lot of summer sun, soil quite heavy and damp at the moment will put organic matter in if not too late.
Thanks for reading.
