yes, it's a good idea - but don't leave them standing in water for ages though.

Couple of hours should be fine, unless they have been bone dry for days. Not sure I would do overnight, either way, perhaps 4 hours if really dry, and an hour if they were wrapped in some damp newspaper or similar.
