Have you got back on to them?
    What did they say?

I've never bought a tree online.
Since it's the right time of year, is there not a nursery near you where you can go and actually choose your own tree?

That would be my first port of call as well. How big is the tree supplied?

Yes I have emailed them, I would guess 4' high and just a single stem about pencil thickness, as regards a local nursery yes but none have Victoria on St Julien.

Is it a maiden? That's how I bought my fruit trees, they were a single stick a couple of feet tall. They grew away quickly and I was able to train them how I wanted them.

If you ordered something other than a maiden then maybe they shipped you a maiden by mistake?

One year old grafted tree. So its just made the first year's growth which is a single "stick". If its 4' tall it made that growth in a single year, after grafting, which ain't bad

A feathered maiden has some side branches on it - perhaps a 2nd year plant (maybe one they didn't sell the year before, I've had feathered maidens when I ordered maidens, and they saved me a year or so's growth training an espalier

I was going to recommend them too, they're excellent.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I bought two plum trees a while ago from the Agroforestry Research Trust (ART). I was quite impressed with their size on delivery - almost as tall as I am (somewhere in the range 5' - 6') and with a nice thick trunk. They were sticks in the sense that they hadn't yet developed side branches, but they weren't small. Similarly for the apple trees I ordered from them. Of the four trees I ordered from ART, 3 established really well and grew significantly in their first year while one is alive but hasn't grown much.

I also ordered some trees from Keepers, and most of them were much smaller than the trees ART supplied for the same price, and have settled in less well. Only one of the trees from Keepers matched the trees from ART in terms of how well they established themselves in their first year.

Just my experience of those two suppliers based on a small sample of trees. Your experience may be different.

I've heard nothing but bad things about Chris Bowers, but I've never used them so can't say from experience whether their word of mouth reputation is justified or not.

Aldi have plum trees at the moment for £3.99.

They are 'sticks' but they're about 7-8 ft high ...
