  • I assume I should prune this apple suckers?

I have this mature cooking apple tree in my back garden - just checking I should be pruning these vertical suckers that appear each year on the main trunk?

Someone else had the same problem & the recommendation was to prune in July but can be thinned out now, have a read:

They're called water shoots and often happen after hard pruning of old trees.
Usually taken off during winter pruning.

I agree with Thelma. Take them off now. If you were to wait until Summer think of the wasted energy the tree would have put into the new growth occurring in each of these suckers during the early part of the growing season. Plus they will be that much thicker in diameter.
