  • Albion strawberries?

On page 22 of the March mag, is an 'offer' for 30 Albion strawberries+ growbags, these are 'ever bearing strawbs.'

Please has anyone grown these? I understand by ever bearing that they kind of just produce continually, but not one big harvest? Do these crop a bit like Alpine strawbs?

Am tempted, but wonder if I might be disappointed, if you only get a couple a week, that's not really much good to me, I like a large bowl ful.

    Thanks

I've not grown Albion but I have grown perpetuals. In my experience they tend to have 2 crops, one around July when the ordinary strawberries are fruiting and another later one which is a bit more spread out and lasts until the frosts. I struggle to get many of the later ones to ripen as I don't get much sun in my garden in the autumn, but if you have a sunny place and 30 plants you should get plenty of fruit. Some books say you should remove the flowers that appear early, but I can never bear to do this.

I planted them one year, but inside the house under growlights.......
They would be worth growing outdoors in the usual way....

Indoors they had a bigish crop and then a few here and there on each plant for about 6 months still fruiting at Christmas as I had 10 plants there were still enough to eat, Just after Christmas I moved them to a cool room for a couple of weeks, then I then dug them up put them in the fridge for a month, then planted them under the growlights again and it was not long before they started growing and fruiting again....then they got spider mites and died....my fault

A friend gave me about ten plants last spring, I didn't think much of perpetuals as I had some alpines before but first they are huge fruit good taste and juicy ,texture was a little hard but I was picking them mabe a bit early they cropped well the whole season no glut but a steady stream this year I will have about another 20 runners soon to be their own bed , so I will have more than enough even last years runners were producing fruit while still joined to the main plant

I would recommend these, impressive size but slugs and ants love them as much as I do,

My Albion strawberries arrived today, complete with 3 'grow bags' , quite large ones, mow I'm not certain whether to plant the strawberries in these but on the plot, or sow direct in the ground? I suppose planting them in these bag things, may stop them rambling everywhere ?

              What do you all think?

Have just decided to plant them directly in the ground, rather than use the patio/planter things, which wud probably rot in time anyway. I'll get a bag of compost or well rotted manure on way to plot, expect to be eating them in June!

Thanks for the heads up on this Dorothy.

I've got the latest GYO mag, but just brushed by page 22, like I do with most of the adverts.

Anyway, I've ordered the 30 plants and intend to grow them in the bags provided and keep in the back garden rather than the plot. It would be nice to just pop out the backdoor and pick something.

Hope you'll be happy with them, they look quite good, and the bags although I haven't used them are a good size. B&Q have their own grow bags, especially for strawberries on offer at 5 for £8.00 at the moment, I used a couple of these to help them along, might be of interest to you.

When they grow, and we are both picking the lbs of fruit!! I 'll think of you!

That's good, and that's your job for today, ( or tomorrow !). Lovely long roots they have, just hoping mine didn't get washed away it's been raining since yesterday!

                            Albion strawberries

Planted these as new plants last year, so obviously didn't expect too much last year, but they still look pathetic ! Have weeded them, giving them chicken manure pellets, thinking of replacing them all.

Someone else on here bought these as well I remember, anyone else, not happy with this variety?

                            Or any ideas please?

                            Thanks

                              I've merged the threads, Dotty.
Hope you get some feedback from the others.
