Melon growing - F1 Emir

Any one had much luck with these - I was going to grow inside the greenhouse - but when goggling - peeps say they are ok for outdoors.

Not that specific one but 2 others, think one was Alaska.
They will grow outdoors but not as well as under some protection.
I had mine in a fair sized pot that had 50/50 compost and manure.
Building a frame for them to climb was a bit of a pain and keeping them off the soil surface was done with some plastic netting (green) folded into 3 layers (worked well).

Pollination was by hand, bees/insects didn't seem to know what do, saw a few around the flowers but nothing looked promising, so grabbed a fine paint brush.
I didn't take the chance of nothing.

I'm sceptical that any melon will grow outside, excepting a roasting & toasting summer!

I grow Sweetheart (in the greenhouse) as it is the most bullet-proof of all the ones I've tried - and Iv'e tried lots of fancy ones over the last 10 years; many grow pretty weedily and don't make enough growth to then fertiliser any fruit, let alone be able to carry it. By comparison I would describe my Sweethearts as thugs (sorry my lovelies !!)

Vegetable Seeds : Melon and Watermelon

This may be of use, they say they are looking for melons for those with shorter growing seasons so I imagine they'll likely do better outside than some others.

I'm going to try Sweet Granite this year and see how I get on

Last year i had reasonable success with melons,inside the polytunnel,in a bottomless pot,climbing up a bamboo,a watering tube near the edge of the pot,pushed down,this keeps the water away from the stem,otherwise they rot,when watering i also watered around the outside of the pot so the lower roots got plenty,i grew Blenheim orange and emire f1,the emire did the best,this year i will be doing them again,also got good results with the cues done same way,

I can't remember the variety of Melons I had last year. Not so sure if I'd grow them again. I had three plants and they did take up rather a lot of space but did produce five rather good size Melons but they didn't ripen in time. They started to grow quite late in the summer plus we didn't have enough sun due to a large oak tree covering most of the greenhouse.
