  • Rita1's grapevine

hi i found some mould on my grape vine, only on the ends, this will be its second year and i have just got 3 rods along the top of the greenhouse, i cut the ends off and i have now noticed that it's bleeding where i cut it. shall i leave it alone or put something on it to stop it bleeding.

You should never prune grapes when the sap is rising for this very reason. Hope the cold weather stops the sap in its tracks?

lesson learnt, i won't be doing that again, i thought with it being so cold that it was still dormant but how wrong i was, i have been reading up and they said it could bleed for a week or so and should stop, but they don't recon on putting anything on the ends to stop the bleed.
lets hope every thing will be ok, as this is my first time growing a grape vine.

Well that's good to know. I'm growing my first two grapevines as well. I'll need to check out the best time to prune, now that I know next spring won't work.

I've occasionally had bleeding from pruning cuts on my grape vine but I've never bothered to cover the bleeding.
It stops eventually and doesn't seem to have much of a negative effect despite my vine living in near-total-neglect conditions (very little attention apart from maybe half-hour annual pruning to tidy it up and keep it within its allowed space).
Grapes tend to be very vigorous, and with high vigour often comes an ability to tolerate damage and neglect.

well the grape vine has stopped the bleed, i am so relieved i thought i might have done long term damage. this will be its second year should i let it grow some grapes this year, i have three rods growing accross my greenhouse.

This is why I asked if you had a photo of the vine. You say you have three rods at the top of the greenhouse, but I'm finding it hard to visualise.

When I had a vine in my old greenhouse I trained it espalier fashion along the side wall. I would have thought you could certainly let it carry a few bunches of grapes this year, but if you can post a photo it will be easier to advise.

No need to worry, it's just marking on the leaves from humidity. Where is the vine growing?

Thank you rustylady for you quick response, i have been really worried, i have found some very tiny little spiders and they have made lots of cobwebs in the top of the greenhouse, i thought they had caused the problem. they do get damp on the leaves when i have closed the greenhouse doors overnight.
also i have found little crystal like sugar on the leaves, does this mean anything.

                            It is not a problem.

exciting my grape vine has tiny grapes

i couldn't believe it my grapevine has tiny tiny grapes growing on it.
this will be it's first year for grapes, it's a red seedless.
i will only let a couple of grapes grow on each rod as it's only in it's 2nd year, do you think 2 or 3 to each rod will be ok or will that be to much for a new vine. it's so exciting.
