grape vine

hi not been on here for ages, but i am still working on my garden and growing my veg. just a quick question my grapevine has been growing for a few years and has produced lovely seedless grapes for the last couple of years, this year i have had some shoots grow very long and not produced any fruit and some mornings the shoot which should be growing the fruit has dropped off onto the floor, any reason why this has been happening. i mulched the root in early spring before growth and watered it once a week since it has started to grow, did not water it through the winter months, not sure if i should or not. the vine is in the the greenhouse. any advice what i have done wrong, also lost some of the flowers from the frost as they were touching the glass.

The vine needs pruning hard in the depths of winter. Don't do it now!!!!! The shoot dropped off because during the night it stiffens up and snaps. For this year just keep it under control by snapping off any unwanted growth. In Dec or Jan prune everything back to the main rod.

hi thank you for your quick reply, i always prune back hard, so only the rods are left over winter. do you water your vine through the winter months. not sure if i am not watering them enough. also when do you feed your vine, when the fruit forms or before. sorry to be a pain.

Mine are outside so I don't need to water. When you say you prune back to the rods it could be that you have too many rods. How big is your greenhouse? Most are only big enough for a single rod.

Is your vine planted in a pot or in the ground? Mine is in the ground, in the greenhouse. I never water it deliberately although some may slosh onto it when I water the plants beneath it. I am already having to prune mine to allow me to get into the greenhouse and to allow me to drape bubblewrap over it in the event of late frosts.

grape vine with weevils

can anyone tell me if my grape vine cane grow back after the weevils has eat any the roots. it looks dead to me but was hoping the roots could grow back. gutted.

Has it got any roots left. If yes there is a chance. Failing that if you have yet to trim it you can shove some bits in a pot somewhere and hope they root.

suggestions on vines

ok i think my grape vine has had it. can anyone suggest a nice one please. it will go into the greenhouse, it must be seedless like my last one, and fruit that you can eat off the vine. thank you.

How long was the last one there?
What are you intending to do to address the weevil issue?

thank you for your response, i have given up, the vine has nothing left but little tiny roots the big one is mushed. so gutted this vine was brilliant.

my last one was a seedless red, been there for 5 or 6 years.
i have put a load of nematodes in a bucket of water and poured it over the vine roots, but we had a frost last night so am not sure if they will survive. i will dig out the soil anyway when i buy another.

The little roots are more important than the big ones. The big ones anchor (use a stake etc.) the small ones feed. Although I have only known weevils to go for the little ones first I would be tempted to put it in a pot to see if it comes back.

If you are replacing the soil then good - was worried about replant issues as well.

vine dead but is it

hi my vine has no buds or anything on it, this vine is grown in the green house. i found loads of weevils in the roots so i gather that it has died, but i cut a small bit off the vine and it started to bleed, does this mean it's not dead.
