Low maintenance mulch for strawberry bed?

I have looked at these stawberry mats you can buy to put around your strawberry plants to control weeds and even slugs with the copper coated ones but they are expensive.
Could I just cover my strawberry bed with weed control fabric and cut holes in it for my strawberry plants to grow through and put a few woodchippings over the top to make it look nicer, surely this would not only help control weeds but also keep the soil moist under it?
My aim is to have a stawberry patch that doesn't need weeding every week, I seem to be able to grow weeds very well.

That's what I do, but I have straw on mine to keep the berries off the ground / membrane / anything moist where they might rot

Thats an ideal environment for woodlice tho! I've never have a problem with weeds,I just put a thick layer of straw under the plants
