  • Raspberry supporting methods

    Hi all.

Are there any other methods of supporting Raspberries other than stretching wire between posts?

    Thanks!

Pin them back to a fence, plant them in a group and tie string round them all, let them flop as I do

Thanks veggiechicken, it's on my allotment though so I don't have a fence

Are they already planted out - or are you planning?

I'm planning. I ordered some a week back and didn't expect them to turn up so soon but they've arrived!

How many and are they summer or autumn ones?

Autumn ones aren't supposed to need support. Am hoping this is the case as I'm putting 20 canes in when they arrive, and no posts etc.

My Autumn canes grow really tall Sparrow and I've no support, they are really sturdy, they do flop a bit but nothi g to worry about.

I was wondering if a cane 'teepee' would work if I put twine around it at certain intervals?

What's wrong with stretching wire between stakes NG?..........I used to use speaker wire as it's more pliable.

Thats my job for tomorrow, weather permitting! Braced post either end of 4 foot wide row and 1 foot spar nailed on bottom, 2 foot spar midway up and 3 foot spar on top, wire stretched across and jobs a goodun!
Train canes in alternative directions and this will make for easier picking and give an open centre.

Mine are planted similarily to VC's at the mo but are a pain in the butt to pick the back rasps.

Moving all my soft fruit to a semi shaded area as they don't mind a bit of dappled shade and i struggle to grow other stuff in this area!

Mainly because my diy skills are shocking and I don't own any tools other than a hammer. So I wouldn't have a clue where to start!

Look away all you keen DIYers, this is my way of doing things

Nursey, all you need is a hammer and a few long sticks of wood or metal poles.
Put sticks at each end of the intended row and wallop them with a hammer. Putting a flat bit of wood on the top of the stick, and hammering onto that, will protect the end of the stick and stop it from splitting. Wear gloves
Tie bits of wire/string/whatever to the sticks and plant raspberries alongside, tying off each cane to the wire/string.
All done - go and have a cuppa.
