  • summer raspberry canes, dead or lazy?

    Hi all,
I bought some raspberry canes a month ago, they arrived after a few days while I was away and my neighbours took them in and kept them indoors. I planted them out as soon as I got back, soaking them in a bucket of water first.
Only one is showing any signs of growth. Have I done something wrong/could the week inside have killed them? or are they just being a bit slow? There were bareroot Strawberries in with them too which are thriving!
(I'm tempted to complain to the company as I had no notification they were coming/had arrived until we got home a week later.)
    Thanks

I planted summer raspberries last year and they're only just growing new canes. Not sure that helps you but mine are very lazy

      Hi,
I would have thought they would all have at least buds on by now (my raspberries are 3 inches plus!

I bought some raspberry canes a few years ago from an on-line cheap garden supplies company.
When I received them, in early winter they had growth like you would expect in spring, i suspect they had been stored in the warm.
I think that when I planted them out they got cold and they didn't recover in the spring.
I then replaced them with some from the RHS shop, their canes were totally dormant and have thrived.

I would be inclined to complain to the company to see what they say, I complained to T+M about some strawberry plants that I received in Autumn, they were very small and very dry/ bashed around when I got them.
They were really good and promised to replace them in February with better plants, which they did! The replacements were much bigger/fresher/stronger.
Definitely worth at least an email.

Mine are the same, I know nothing about raspberries so asked a 90 year former head gardner on the site, he came over gave the canes a tug and declared them fine. I now wait with bated breath for growth

I should have added that my established summer raspberries are in leaf and have flower buds so the difference between them and the newly planted ones in very noticeable.

I'll wait and watch then. I think because the Strawberries have sprouted like nobody's business I expected the Raspberries to do the same. My neighbour has lots of older canes which have leaves all over them so mine look like sticks in mud
Does it mean I won't get Raspberries this year?

Summer raspberries fruit on canes from the previous year. Autumn raspberries throw new canes in spring and carry fruit in the autumn.
So sorry, no fruit for you this year

Boo. Never mind, jam will have to wait until next year.

My canes were delivered a short while ago and are slowly coming to life, I think that it will be fairly normally bearing in mind they were dormant until a few weeks ago. The rasps were planted approx. 6 weeks ago or more and they took a good 4 weeks to look alive. Have patience

Well Moopmoop, my freebies from GYO Mag are still being really shy. No sign of any growth on either the raspberries or strawberries. Given up on the Strawbs, I think they are long gone but had a scratch at the bottom of the raspberry canes and they are green so as you said in another thread...maybe it's just because I'm that bit further north and it hasn't exactly been tropical up here so far!

Mine that we popped in the ground last Autumn are only just making leaves - for the most part they look as healthy and productive as their support posts!
Patience, watering and feeding and they should sort themselves out

1 out of 10 has a leaf bud on it, so better than nothing I suppose

I got mine a month ago from Ashridge. They are only now starting to look like they are waking up. Bear in mind that you may have got them very shortly after they were taken from the beds where they were grown. In my case that was from somewhere very cold in Scotland, sent to Ashridge, who then sent them to me. They are probably in need of a bit of patience. I'm saying that, looking at them and saying 'Come on, get a MOVE ON!'.

My Glen Moy started growing this week. There are no leaves on the Glen Ample yet but the buds are about to burst.

The warm weather has brought them on quickly.
