  • Rhubarb for pots/small town garden

I have a small south-facing town garden - about 5x5m, mostly lawn with borders around the edge. I've planted some currant bushes but my wife would love me to grow rhubarb - however having grown it in a bigger garden I don't think it would fit well.

Are there small-leaf varieties, and/or can I grow rhubarb in in a medium sized pot to keep it tamed?

Also - does it require full sun? I have some space at the front of the house but this is north-facing and only gets afternoon sun during the summer.

    My experience is:

    1. Rhubarb sends down deep roots and will need at least a deep pot to be happy, althought a narrow one might be OK
    2. It is fairly shade tolerant and doesn't need full sun to grow well

Never seen what I would describe as a small rhubarb, always seemed fairly large. So I would think you will need a fairly large pot/container.

They also like a rich soil so a good helping of manure would be useful.

I grew some from seed and kept some in pots to see how they did. They do rubbish compared to being in the ground and put roots through the bottom of the pot to the soil anyway.
