  • Need to replace my cherry tree.

So the kids play house flew off the patio with the wind a few weeks ago and just totally took out my cherry tree... like snapped it in half!

So, now I'm looking for a replacement, I'm after a sweet one that I can just pick and eat from. Anyone got any ideas?

    Thanks guys x

What variety was the one you had? Is there no chance it will re sprout, assuming the break is above the graft?

Yeah but its only about 10" above the graft, its literally just a twig sticking out the ground now
Im not sure what type it is as I lost the tag that was on it.

Hmm, bonsai cherry just what you wanted! It might be more of a case of what you can get hold of. Now the bareroot season is over there seems to be less variety in pot grown ones. I've never grown cherries so hopefully someone else who knows more will be able to advise.

Stella seems to be the most commonly sold cherry - I have two and the cherries are good to eat - when you can pick them before the birds.
          Don't buy Morello - that's for cooking.

Where do you intend to plant the replacement? Stone fruit trees shouldn't be planted where stone tree fruit were they should be followed by apples or pears

The tree will probably grow back what it lost, although will have a bend in the stem where it grows back and will take a couple of years before it starts fruiting again.
On the plus side, it already has an established root system so you might be surprised how quickly it re grows.
Use a bamboo cane/stick to tie the new growth upright to form the new trunk. Pinch-out the shoot tip when it's at the point where you'd like branches to form. Once you've got the main branches forming, if you regularly pinch the tips after every several inches of growth you might find it'll start fruiting next year.

I cannot recommend these highly enough Quality Fruit Trees For Sale | Buy Online | Blackmoor Nurseries

I wanted a cherry tree to form into an espalier and they provided me with the ideal tree, a Stella sweet cherry- self pollinating on a dwarfing rootstock. Still in the construction stage but I'm impressed.

                Cheers, Tony.

Well I was in work yesterday and was having a look about and come across a stella in a pot. It says its sweet and can be eaten straight from the tree. Was gonna ask on here but I see someone has already suggested so I think I will buy that one.

If its in a pot will it be ok to go straight in the ground after Ive added feed and organic matter? or will I have to wait till autum?

                  Thanks guys

Personally I'd plant itright away. If you don't you'll almost certainly have to pot it up anyway, so why do more work for an inferior solution? In the ground is almost always better in my opinion.

if you have no option other than to plant in the same space dig out a large area and replace as much soil as possible if your other tree was nice and healthy before the accident i don't see much of a problem but if it had any disease then it maybe in the soil i have a stella and the few cherry's i had last year where very nice but the birds got more than me its a young tree more blossom this year so fingers crossed good luck with yours
