Has anyone mentioned cranberries? If yes how do you grow them? I did have them but died not long after I moved but they never fruited , just wondered if they are worthy of going on my wishlist.

Yet another fruit loop here. I don't have the amount of space other folks do, (just 4m x 8m here) but I still manage to cram a few things in:

      2 x apple trees
      Cherry tree
      Chequerberry
      Mirabelle de nancy
      Blueberries
      Pinkberries
      Raspberries
      Strawberries
      Alpine strawberries
      Blackcurrant
      Jostaberry
      Elder
      Fig
      Medlar
      Blackberry
      Passionflower/passionfruit
      Dwarf pomegranate
      Blue sausage fruit
      Barberry

Also in but not ready to bear yet is dwarf quince, szechuan pepper, persimmon, and trifoliate orange

        Please forgive me
        Blue sausage fruit?
Where do you buy them, also, what do they taste like?

Feed the soil, not the plants.

Also known as Dead Man's Fingers. Look up Decaisnea Fargesii for more details. I only put mine in last year and haven't had fruit yet, so can't comment on the taste. Fingers crossed for this year.

Ooooh so jealous of everyone's lovely stuff!
Can I be a fruit loop too?

We already have 4 apple trees, cherry, rasps, strawbs and (fingers crossed, if I'm VERY lucky) melons. Lemon tree in the kitchen. Hoping to squeeze in a kiwi in the back somewhere, lusting after peach or nectarine trees and possibly a grape vine (heck, why not have them all? Who needs a lawn?) but starting to think I should just dig up all my lovely flowers and fill up with fruit!

Very nice to see that everyone seems to be in love with fruit too. I forgot to add pinkberries to my list as they are still blueberries to me. I have a cranberry but I only put it in back end of last year so no fruit yet. Did you have them in ericaceous compost? Mine is, but it still doesn't seem too healthy? I'll keep my eye on it to see if it perks up over the next few months. I only bought mine to use up the leftover eric compost after repotting blueberries

Mine were very healthy on neglect and ignorance so in answer to your question - No

I think I had them for three years and I used to give them an annual hair cut as they would trail for about 1m possibly a bit more maybe that is where I went wrong

Maybe I'll try some neglect too then. Crikey I hadn't realised they would trail that much . Did you have them in the ground or a pot? Mine is in a pot

Mine was in a pot and I stood it on an inverted pot (mini pedestal style) and it would just trail

It's also more environmentally friendly. Perennials are good for protecting the soil, and the fact they're there means you don't dig all the time, so the soil flora and fauna can thrive. They often flower and grow earlier in the year annuals will, which supports bees etc. And the vertical structure means more biomass in total, which supports more wildlife, although a lot of it is creepy crawlies and their predators.

They say that forest is the climax vegetation for our climate. Before people were here most of the country was covered with trees, and if we all vanished it'd go back to being forested again pretty quickly.

I have three greengage and am contemplating replacing one with a mirabelle. Have you had much success with this?

Is this worth growing? I've thought about planting a devon sorb apple before.
