Hi,
I have a few maiden pear and plum trees that are ready for initial formative pruning. There are lots of shoots appearing and I was wondering if I should let them form branches or begin rubbing about the buds that seeem obviously too closely spaced. Supppose this question applies to all forms, and not just pyramids. When to begin selecting branches - when in leafing buds, or actual wood of a certain length?
Also, I've seen pictures of trees where the pyramids have been pruned to form flat, 2D shapes ie. all branches on one plane, like a flat espalier. This supposedly maximizes light to branches, but means the tree is unbalanced. (Reliant on support of a stake)
Other pictures show branches radiating out in each direction, like a 3d shape, ie. a christmas tree that looks the same as you walk round it. This is better balanced, but some branches will not get as much light.
which is preferable a 2D tree or a 3D pyramid? ANy opinions would be appreciated. Thanks.
