  • Protect Your Cherries

Heyup!...........Mr Wacky here with another crazy idea.......................

How do you protect your Cherries?...............Well, I've come up with this simple idea:
Get a zip-lock bag, cut 2 slits down the sides approx 2-3" long, strip the branch of any leaves around the Cherries that you want to protect, put the bag over the Cherries & wrap it round the branch, Re-zip the bag...............The birds won't be able to get at them & I'm hoping the bags will speed up the ripening process..............knowing my luck they will condense & rot..................

    Hi
"knowing my luck they will condense & rot"
I think they will---Cheesecloth, muslin, old net curtains, tights, stockings (should get the neighbours talking)
Feed the soil, not the plants.
    (helps if you have cluckies)

A guy at our site made branch sleeves from the cheap white fabric fleece from wilko`s. Wrapped it around then stapled it.

That might work you never know, l would cut the bottom corner out and let some air get in.
        good luck anyway.
l remember seeing a whole pear in a bottle, a special liquor of sorts, anyway the way that was done was to put the
tiny pear in the bottle hung from the tree let it mature nip it of and bobs your uncle pear in a bottle.
you'll have a fat bag of cherries in no time.....

I've made the slits about 3" long so plenty of air circulation. I can always put some holes in the bag if it gets condensed up.

I was in South Korea two years ago and they wrap apples and pears in paper bags to protect them!

There would definitely be a danger of powdery mildew developing if you used plastic bags, and I'd imagine paper bags would fall apart pretty quickly in our climate. By far the easiest solution is wrapping the branches with material, which is how we came up with the idea for our Wraps. They took a few years to develop but we've been pleased with the results for the last couple of years!

Thank you for your input CG. Both bottom corners of the bags have been cut off thereby increasing airflow, reducing condensation & aiding drainage...................Don't go pinchin my idea now........

Just a quick update. The Cherries in the bags are starting to ripen.......................so are a bit advanced on their unprotected counterparts.

I'm going to try this! I thOught wood pigeons were lovely, marching up and down like sergeant majors and eating from the feeder next to me, quite Unafraid. But, I've changed my mind as they've eaten loads of brassicas and are now sitting on the tiny cherry tree pecking cherries that aren't ripe, knocking other cherries off and being a nuisance
You may say I'm a dreamer... But I'm not the only one...

I've seen them strip blossom off plum and cherry trees (breaking young thinner stems in the process), not satisfied with that they've also had a go a young cherry tree leaves as well!

To call pigeons winged rats is a great disservice to the rat.

Well, somehow the pigeons broke a branch off! It's only a young tree. But presently it's blackbirds gobbling the cherries. There were only about thirty cherries to begin with. They're eating them before they are ripe too. I have planted all sorts to attract birds, there are feeders too and a pond. But I'm getting quite cross with them now as they are eating everything, even the stuff meant for me! Not sure how I can stop this. Very frustrating as blackbirds are my favourites (usually!) and I like them in the garden just not on my cherry tree! How are your bags working BM.
