Propagate Japanese Wineberry

Hi

I have a lovely wine berry that is about 3-4 years old. It produces lovely fruit but I would like a couple more.

A few people have said to propagate just pin a branch down like a strawberry then a month later it will be a new plant. Has anyone propagated any of these before?

Also do you pin down a fruiting branch or a non fruiting branch, and do you do it after the fruit had been harvested or can you do it now? Being a not so common fruit bush Google is not great on the finer detail of this!!

Treat it just like a blackberry and tip layer it. Take the end of one of the long shoots and bury it in the ground or a large pot. It should produce roots in no time at all. Sometimes it helps as in layering to slightly damage or nick the end where it touches the soil. Best to do it when it isn't fruiting so I'd do it after harvesting. It should root in the autumn and can be transplanted in the spring.

You should be rooting one of the new canes/shoots that grow from the plant for next year as the old fruiting ones die back like blackberry canes do.

Incidentally, in the right place it seems to self seed fairly easily and I found a new cane growing around ten metres away from the orginal.

A beautiful fruit which should be better known, though it takes some time to pick a reasonable number of the small berries for a proper dessert.
