  • Cherry glut ideas

    Happy days!
    Apparently it is a good year for cherries!

    So good in fact, that my husband's uncle has been unable to harvest all of the cherry trees in his orchard. We are setting off early in the morning....tupperware at the ready....to relieve uncle of this tdreadful burden

    All I need now is some idea of what to do with them!
    There's cherry brandy of course,
    and cherry vinegar,
    a couple of jars of cherry pie filling maybe...
    Then what?

    Got any recipes folks?
    Preferably ones that don't take up freezer space.

    Can you stone and 1/2 them and dehydrate?
    More Cherry brandy/wine--can you have too much?

      I fill 1/2 litre Le Parfait jars with them...or large jam jars, and put them in a water bath boiling for30 mins. Then leave to cool.
      They easily keep for a year like that if kept in the dark.
      The juice comes out a bit, but they don't take up valuable freezer space. Perfect for pies or with Icecream etc later in the year.

      No stoning required before putting in the jars either!
      Think I best get my jars ready, mine are just starting to go black mmmmm......

        I'm thinking of making cherry curd...just liquidising the cherry pulp and using a general fruit curd recipe.

        Having said that, this recipe has caught my eye...

        Amaretto curd - By Hook Or By Cook

        ..then maybe use the pulp in something else.

          Oh my!
          Amaretto curd looks a bit special doesn't it?
          It doesn't use much cherry juice (2/3 cup) so I think I will divert some when making cherry jelly.

          Dehydrated sounds good too....and I have an under used dehydrator...

          Cherry wine....hmmmm....never tried cherry wine. It doesn't taste like Dr pepper does it? I don't like the medicinal twang of some cherry flavoured things (although I adore fresh cherries)

            We rent a cherry tree and had about 20kgs of it last year!

            You can freeze them whole, just put them in freezer bags.

              Blend with plain yogurt and make cherry leathers, use instead of sweets.
              Feed the soil, not the plants.

                  The locals here make rakia,

                  In a 200l plastic barrel, fill up with water, add sugar, pack of rapid bread yeast.... lid back on loosely to stop flies....
                  After a few weeks, distill it ( ok.....Hmmm sort of illegal in the uk..... but very easy! )
                  Living off grid and growing my own food in Bulgaria.....
