  • Blackcurrant bushes

I have just managed to get two blackcurrant bushes in the sale at the local garden centre.

They are about 3-3.5ft tall and have good growth but no fruit.

Can i plant them now ? or should they be pot raised until autumn ?

    Thanks

    Anthony

I would get them in the ground now. Water well until they are established especially if we continue with this heat. I think you would struggle with watering if you left them in the pot.

Likewise - what Scarlet said . If you put them in now there is still time for them to make some good growth to improve your crop next year.

Best of luck with your two bushes. I started with two a few years back. I now have at least 30. Cuttings next year!

If they are in pots and young plants they are fine going into the ground without trimming the tops. When it gets to Autumn and the leaves have fallen off you can trim any shoots you don't want - ie which are crossing. Stick those into slits in the ground and you will have new free bushes in the Spring. They root really easily. I have had 3 fresh cuttings stuck in water for a couple of weeks and they are already showing roots.
