Novice grower

Hey guys,

I've taken my bare garden to somewhere near what I want it to look like.
I've got plum/cherry/apple/pear and olive trees growing. Redcurrants/blueberries/gooseberries and raspberries aswell but I'm looking at growing some fig trees but quite frankly I don't want to pay bit bucks for the trees.

So I was thinking can I grow from an actual shop bought fig?

The first of many questions I'll need answered in the future.

Hi Geoff, welcome to the Forum!
Do you know anyone with a fig tree? If you can beg a side shoot they root very easily and will give you a head start on trying to grow from seed. Not sure how long that would take?

Aldi had fig plants in the other week for £5 (as "Trellis Trained Fruit Plants") - check them out if they're near you as they may still have a couple left.

Veggie chicken & Fishpond, I'm from Northern Ireland. Might be a trek to Hampshire sadly! ☺

We do have an Aldi about 20 miles away, so might try them.

Will keep you all updated if I strike lucky.

a lot of the gardening mags,especially amateur gardener, seem to offer young fig plants with just the cost of postage, the plants are small, about 6ins cuttings, but they soon grow away into good sized plants.use a half dustbin size pot so you can move it around or into a greenhouse, allowing it to grow better,faster. my tiny plant is now fan trained with 5 arms on each side but it is sulking this year as I moved it to give it more space, and it promptly dropped all the young fruits but we usually get 20-30 even up here and its outside now all the time...
