I saw in a magazine that Frank P Matthews are going to start selling saskatoon varieties (Amelanchier alnifolia) for fruit:
Saskatoon from Frank P Matthews
But are they really worth eating? Has anyone tried any of the Canadian varieties selected for the fruit production?
I have a columnar one that wasn't bred for fruit ("Obelisk") in my garden, and to me the fruit tastes like slightly mushy peas more than anything. It's OK, but it doesn't taste that much like a dessert fruit and I'm not sure I'd bother growing a small tree to get pea-flavoured berries. I could grow actual peas and a more useful fruit tree instead.
