My blackcurrants don't seem to have that blackcurrant flavour. They are pleasant enough, but don't taste of blackcurrant. It's a small bush which I've only had in for 2 years. Last year it produced very little, but this year it has fruited well for it's size, but the flavour isn't there. Is it because it is young? Any way to develop a better flavour?

I don't remember ours being tasteless in their early years of fruiting - come to think of it, I took some cuttings and they have fruited for the first time but are very tasty.
Have you had a lot of rain where you are? that might make a difference. I'm quite surprised that they don't taste of blackcurrant though. Are you sure you weren't duped, if you rub the leaves, do they smell of blackcurrant or (as VC says) cat wee

have they been allowed to ripen properly?, as I always taste one before I pick(it has been known to rain here on the west coast, if only it had been known to stop, as its raining again now) , even a couple of days makes a difference to the taste, just cos they are black doesn't really mean they are ready, I have been there , done it etc...you will know next year, it is how we all learn....Comment

They do tend to swell enormously just before they are ready and the skin takes on a haze (can't explain it) but a whitish transparentish covering.A garden is a lovesome thing, God wot! (Thomas Edward Brown)

just taste some of each bush then you know what you are getting, they make a lovely mousse(that's OH's job) or ice cream. trim 12ins off the top in the autumn and put the offcuts into a big pot or a greenhouse border about 3/4 depth and by next may it will have roots and can be carefully lifted and replanted, giving you more fruit....that's got to be good news..Originally posted by scarey55 View PostComment

Some varieties aren't that brilliant. I had one, I think called jet that fruited well but the fruit just didn't taste, I just have a boskoop giant variety now that I've propagated for about 30+ years. When just black, they are tangy - ideal for jam, wait a couple more weeks and they are a sweet desert. So if you are going to take some cuttings, try to find a nice tasting one that will do you for life.Comment
