  • Variegated leaves on raspberry

Any idea why this leaf variegation should occur?
The plant has been here for years. I've no idea what variety it is or even whether it fruited this year. However, the colouration is so striking that its earnt its keep

    It looks like a virus.
But, if you are happy with the crop and there is no sign of them dying, your choice.
But I would be thinking about where to start a new Raspberry patch.

Feed the soil, not the plants.

Its OK, Bob, its nowhere near the real raspberry patch. Its a stray in a flower bed and I don't have the heart to pull them out

I had a poke about on Google to see ho common it was, and it appears there is nothing like it, well not on Google anyhow....

It certainly looks pretty, I wonder if it would strike as a cutting.... you could make your fortune.

I think I've had the odd one do it, is it an autumn variety? It's a mutation - could be caused by all sorts of things or nothing at all. Variegated leave shave lower photosynthetic ability so in theory they are less efficient users of sunlight but (I have just learnt) lots of tropical plants do it and no one is sure why. It would be interesting to see how well it fruits and whether the variegation is repeated in subsequent shoots or you could just enjoy it.

PS. I just don't have enough time to say hello to everyone as they join so please take this as a delighted to see you here!
