  • Possible 'Sticky' thread for 'Feeling Fruity' Page ??

Dear Mods - please feel free to delete if inappropropriate.

However, would it be possible for a sticky thread which could give numpties like me tips/suggestions/methods/expertise, etc. on pruning and propogating fruit bushes and trees ?

    Yours always

Going to take the opposing view, apologies Kevin.

Not a fan of Sticky's, I cannot recall ever reading one anywhere.
In the Vegging out there is more then a screen full of them. Anyone fancy actually deleting the vast majority?

Them seem to get too much in them, the Onions from Seed one has 42 pages in it. Does it really need 42 pages of posts to explain growing onions from seed. How many of those 42 pages of posts are not actually detailing growing onions from seed. However take a look in the main forum and people ask about growing onions from seed.

Bet quite a few posts say they have never grown from seed so will read the thread. That is not supplying information about growing onions from seed. That is "noise" that makes locating real information more difficult.

Another is 2015 Calendar, presently 45 pages.

If they are going to be present I think they need to be limited in size, one page of posts no more, which means I suppose a mod removing or adding ones that add to the topic, not a free for all by everyone to put something in.

As said not a fan of stickies.

Sorry BB, after thinking about it - with the amount of different plants and the variety of ways they need pruning/propogating, then a stick thread would most probably become 'clogged up' with most peiple veing unable to find what they are after.

        Scrap that idea.

However, what about a 'Site Suggestions' thread, possibly in General - where folks can post their thoughts on improving the site, rather than starting pointless threads just like I've done.

Ha!!!!...at the moment I think it would be filled with chat about the adverts and inability to do things on mobile devices!!!

But we mods will certainly have a chat about it Kevin.

Always happy for peeps to pm us direct with suggestions!...that's what makes this place continue to progress rather than be stuck in a rut

Kirk, you're right (in a way), and after thinking about it - it's probably not such a great idea.

I suppose my reasoning to start the thread was 2 things:

1 - I was looking for advice on propogating a red currant bush, trying the Search function and I get inundated with threads that have no relation to my enquiry.

2 - There have been some great threads, which offer some fantastic advice that I can no longer find (one about grafting different varieties of apples to your existing apple tree was great).

Maybe it's just me being unable to use the search facility properly.

Anyway, Mods - please feel free to delete.

Cheers Nicos - and yes, it would probably end up being a thread to make gripes about the site, rather than suggestions to improve it.

Once the webmasters ( great name eh?? ) have sorted out the main probs, I'm going to ask them to look at the search facility to try and make it more specific!

Maybe, if we have a popular sticky we assign an Editor to edit and look after that thread or group of threads so the threads make sense and are easy to navigate.

Editors do not have any moderator privileges or any editing abilities in any other threads but the one they are assigned.

I just means that someone has perpetual editing ability on that certain thread.

You may already have your answers but, red currants are easy to propagate. This is worth a read.

All my prunings go towards new plants. I often stick a few twigs in a pot and leave out side. 90% will take.

As for tree grafting, I find the search function difficult. Try a different method of searching. Can you remember who posted it? Click on FB or orange Pippin profile pages and look at their latest posts. You may hit lucky, they don't post in many other sections.

Paul- you have to be a mod to have editing rights on here.

We do however have an archived forum where grapes can't post, but we are more than happy to put threads which peeps have found especially helpful in there.
Maybe that's something we can look to doing more in the future?

I have just asked Admin if they can ask the web peeps to look at the search facility- it's been pretty dire for a long time- basically since the site has been so successful and we've had masses of new posts!

Is this the thread you meant about apple tree grafting, Kevin?
                            http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...ees_79924.html
With all the currant and goosegog bushes, I stick the prunings into a slit in a spare bit of garden or, at a push, into a bucket or water and wait for them to root. There are gooseberry cuttings in a glass on the kitchen windowsill as we speak.

No, it's not just you, the search on the forum is pretty rubbish. You'd probably have more luck with a Google site search. Type the following into Google:

                              site:growfruitandveg.co.uk/grapevine propagating red currants

Or for a tighter search (may be more accurate but less results) use quotes:

                              site:growfruitandveg.co.uk/grapevine "propagating red currants"

Or replace the bit after the site address with whatever you want to search for.
Posted on an iPad so apologies for any randomly auto-corrected gobbledegook
