  • Growing blackberries against a wall - what distance between trellis/wire and wall?

I've decided to grow blackberries on the rear (south-facing) wall of the garage so will need some sort of support/trellis for them. I will probably simply fix some large screws into the wall (which is made of concrete blocks with a wet-dash covering) and run taught, horizontal wire lines between them (cheap with minimal fuss and effort). Question is, how far off the wall should the wire lines be?

Far enough away that you can get your hand behind it as you'll need to attach the canes to the wire. If the blackberries are thorny ones, leave space for your gloves as well
Somebody who knows what they're talking about will be along soon

I see. So it's more my requirements than the plant's. Thanks, VC.

Ere yer go, Vine eyes are the very thing, these are 100mm long but are also available in 75mm, other places sell them but these are probably the cheapest at a reasonable quality ..... Zinc-Plated Vine Eyes 100mm Pack of 10 | Eyes | Screwfix.com

Cracking. Thanks, BB. While I'm here, another quick question, if I may...

Are there any disadvantages to growing the blackberries against a wall?
