  • Kiwi- what would YOU suggest?

I've just been offered a male kiwi plant- no idea which variety, but I know for sure it's a male.

Thing is, I've been toying with the idea of , at some point planting a fig tree- and a self pollinating Jenny kiwi.
I'm not ready yet, but it could live in a large pot for a while.

so- do I take it or don't I?
I have plenty of space for it and a Jenny , BUT- I don't really want a male if it doesn't improve the yield of the Jenny.

Can anyone help me out with the pollination aspect please?

I'm thinking I'll only accept it if I know for sure it will boost the Jenny's kiwi production

I can't help at all, other than to say I bought a self pollinating Jenny which resolutely only produces male flowers so you can have mine too if you like!

I had a Jenny and all the flowers looked the same. Never could tell male from female. Had plenty of fruit from it before it overwhelmed me and the house.

This website says "There are self fertile varities of each species which yield smaller fruits."

So if a male helps give bigger fruits,I'd go for it.

I've got one that came from Aldi. It's done not a lot in the couple of years I've had it.

Just had a quick google again (always good to double check things) & there's this website too that says "Self fertile cultivars require no male pollinizer, although fruit size may be larger with cross pollination". On page one.

Female flowers aren't as hardy as male flowers i noticed whilst googling, that could be a reason for male flowers only?

Mine was going to be dug up this year, but maybe I'll give it one more chance.

Great link Jane- I'll go ahead and keep it then!
                Thanks!

( now all I need to worry about are the very cold winters!)
