Grapevine problem

----------------------------------------------------------------------------Three years ago I planted a red variety grapevine outside to grow up a pergola. Last year it yielded a heavy crop of red grapes and again this year it is growing rapidly and the bunches of grapes are forming. The problem is that the a good number of the leaves are rapidly turning to a deep red colour. Is this natural at this time of the year or does it indicate a problem with the vine. Having never grown grapes before I would be very grateful for some advice please. regards grahamh

The same has happened to some of my vines this year. It happened last year with no ill effects, and I've seen pics in books on grape growing of healthy vines with reddened leaves, so I guess this is perfectly normal. If there are no associated blisters (Erinium Mite) or obvious signs of fungal disease, I shouldn't worry.

I only planted my baby vine a couple of weeks ago and it too has developed reddened leaves. I thought maybe it was the nutrients in the ground or the shock of the move. I've left well alone and so far it doesnt seem to be suffering any other 'symptoms' but this is my first ever grape so thanks Mark for putting my mind at rest as well! (And sorry to Graham for hijacking your thread!)

This website: http://www.three-sisters-vineyard.co...5/aug2005.html shows a Lincolnshire vineyard in August. There are some very clear pics showing reddened leaves, very similar to the condition our vines are in mid-july. Probably a result of being slightly further south and the unusual weather conditions this year.

Thanks for those replies. Thought autumn had arrived early, but seems everything ok after all. The leaves are exactly like the Lincolnshire vineyard grapes shown in the above website. Regards to all - grahamh
