Moving Tayberry

I planted a new Tayberry and Loganberry in early spring. There has been a little growth but not much.

The thing is we are planning to move next Autumn. So I am wondering if it would be better potting up the two plants now or leaving it until a move is imminent? I am not worried if no fruit comes next year but wish to preserve the plants for later years.

I am currently preparing other plants for the move or taking cuttings. (Yes, i can buy more but the plants have history).

I think I'd give it another year in the ground and move it next autumn.

I would leave it where it is and move it when you actually make the move yourself. They are generally shallow rooted and so getting them out is not too great a problem - except for the numerous thorns they are not a thornless variety. Keep the roots damp as they tend to be fine so dry out

You might get a little fruit next year from the growth this year, if there is any of significance, before you haul it out of the ground.

Probably best to prune it when you dig it up, I have tried to give one away and maintain 4 to 6 foot canes. Not sure it was really worth the effort and trouble.

How long have you been growing yours Kirk? Mine was really slow to start. This year was a bumper crop for me, other years not so. Mines been in 6years now so it may be that they take a while to settle in? I wouldn't give mine up - they are delicious

You have both taken one worry away as I have been looking at the plants but they have not done much and I thought that it was a problem that I had started.
