strawberry runners

hi all ,i have some strawberry plans with plenty of runners that are taking root ,what id like to know is when is the best time to move them and put them into rows ? i`d like to leave them as long as possible to let the roots get nice and big ,any thoughts ? cheers

I wouldn't let the roots get too established as you will have to break more when you dig them up. Have you cut the runners from the mother plant? If you have and they have clearly rooted then I would get on and do it soonish while the soil is still warm and not too wet.

I agree with Wendy. Get them moved and settled before winter sets in. They will romp away happily in the spring, then.

Yep, another vote for moving them now, that way, they will have a chance to establish before the frosts arrive.

hi , i havent cut the runnres from the mothers yet most have rooted but not all ,ok thanks i`ll get up there tomorow and get them moved ,cheers

Mine have been seperated and re-planted. They've already put a spurt of growth on so get them moved big man.

Mine are still in 3" pots as I've not sorted the new bed yet....... Ideally they'd be settling in by now though.

I hadn't given this much consideration myself, I'm glad you posted it. I've left about half of mine in their little pots, although I did plant a bunch in a big trough, which was going to be their temporary container until I had my new planter built. Better get a shift on and sort that out this week.

I've transplanted most of the bigguns but there were a lot of little runners that needed to be cut off. Some were runners off runners, if you know what I mean?

I stuck these little runners into one of these

(no compost) and put it in a gravel tray with water in it.. Most of them have sent out roots through the hole in the module and I now have to find homes for another 30 plants.

Really easy to do!

If I wanted to grow strawberries in a pot do I need to get one of those bespoke ones i.e. with openings around the sides, or would any container and size do? Is regular MPC suitable?

Any pot will do and MPC is fine.
