  • To prune or not to prune, tis my question

I have been left a mixture of fruit canes and roots. Some of which have little white canes appearing and others with a bunch of old canes. I can see that some are raspberries, and a couple are gooseberries. None are well established plants so it's hard to tell if they are autumn or summer ones.

Please could you advise a complete novice on if i should plant and prune or leave all until i can identify everything in the new season.

    Many thanks

My simple method for pruning raspberries - whatever type - if its dead cut it down, if its not, leave it.

Not sure I understand your post.

I think you have been left a few plants that are not in the ground. If they are in pots I would leave them until spring and plant them out then. If they are bare roots I would get them in now. Nice deep hole with plenty compost or well rotted manure. Watch how they grow and decide how to deal with them in the following year when you know when they fruit.

If on the other hand they are already in the ground I would again leave them until next year. Give them a mulch and as Veggiechicken says cut out the dead stuff asap. Give them all a boost in late spring by feeding them sulphate of potash (if non organic). Try chicken pellets and a good mulch if organic.

Prune the gooseberries next year and start to form into a glass bowl shape or grow as a standard. Remember that it is better to leave more growth than to take it all off!

Best of luck, very nice present.

          Thanks a lot friends

Yes some are already in the ground and some plants have been dug up and left on my plot.

So i will get all the other plants in with well rotted manure and cut off all the dead stuff. In spring i guess i should be able to decipher what they all are and how to manage them.

@lottie dolly; For some reason I cannot edit my profile to show location etc.

Once you have some leaves on the plants in spring, we should be able to identify the plants (in a vague sort of way - not named varieties).
You'll need to make a few more posts before you can edit your profile, Root, just tell us whereabouts you are for now so we have some idea of your weather.

If you aren't sure, I'd leave them be, until you have a better idea what you're dealing with. The dead stuff isn't going anywhere.
