Asda fruit tree

Hi I found today that Asda is selling fruit tree already when I remember being out in March for this season. Now I know this is time to buy trees but I found that the apple are m26rootstock wich is good for me because I want to make an espalier. Now the varieties that they sell apparently are good pollinator to each other and suitable for northern Britain. The varieties are discovery, jonagold and James grieve. Should I go back and buy them?

Jonagold is apparently a triploid according to Keepers and therefore won't pollinate other trees well. Since neither Discovery or James Grieve is listed as self fertile, don't get Jonagold unless you're going to plant all 3 varieties.

Discovery is a partial tip-bearer and therefore possibly not perfect for making an espalier?

Thanks for the reply. What you just told me is a great news. I have space for few trees and I was gonna put 2 espalier at the back to hide the sheds and composting area ( well done hats what my plan is for the next few years) and some at the end in one corner. So all three look ideal for my plot

That's a good news. I was gonna plant two espalier and some other fruit trees in the future for my plot so I'll buy all three wich 2espalier and the discovery one as a standard tree

if you have any crabapple trees by you the james greive apple will do fine, just eating the last of mine now and they seem to improve in flavour after a while in storage, and bred for the wetter west coast..

There are 2 crab apple tree in the same allotment site. I've being working for the weekend. I plan to go at the plot on Tuesday so if they still there il buy them and plant them.

I bought a number of apple trees from asda this spring but the first tree that has fruited is not what was on the lable so looks like its just a lottery of leftover relabled trees

That's what worries me. I don't mind what variety they are as long they grow here.

I bought some good trees from "the range" at really cheap prices, even a dwarf apricot at £6, last of the big spenders, and it produced 13 (its first crop) absolutely beautiful fruit this year, so I will keep watching for when they go on sale again..

I got a jonagold in 2013/14 they are nice little apples, I do have other apple trees and a crab apple so didn't really buy it for pollination, but if you have the space to squeeze one in. I would recommend it

Thanks for the advice. Being m26 rootstock they are quite a acceptable size when mature so I will have space for them. Plus they look that have quite few branches already so maybe I'll be able to make one or 2 tier on the espalier

I had a look at Asda today, there were about 3 or 4 varieties of apple tree, a pear and a plum (victoria) and a morello cherry tree.

Picked myself up a cherry tree and I' going to have a go with it in a container

If you have an aldi near you they do good bareroot trees for £4 every february

I picked up a couple of Gooseberry plants from Aldi not long ago for £1.80 each. Figured at that price they were worth a go.

Are they graft or are standard size?
