  • Any idea what this fruit is?

At work the other day I came across a huge tree, that had littered the ground with strange fruits. They looked like unripe oranges, but when I opened on, it was unsegmented and had a big stone in the middle. The tree itself is huge, with leaves that reminded me of rowan. I asked someone, but they didn't know what it was either, they just said it was inedible. Any thoughts?

Sorry, I didn't get a picture, but I'll post one on Friday.

What shape was the stone? I'm wondering about almonds - some have very bright fruit but I'm not sure the leaves would look like Rowan.

Could be a walnut tree, maybe?

I think you're on the money, Martin, sounds like walnut to me too.

Martin I think you win. That would also explain why there were so many walnuts in the compost! Thanks guys. I'm going to have to collect them.

The outer casing stains your hands, so wear rubber gloves.

Thanks for the tip. Don't suppose it stains them brown, because I've been scrubbing my hands all week thinking somehow mud has permeated my skin
