  • Low chill apple varieties

Hi all, my mother-in-law is visiting, and after tasting some of my homegrown apples would like some of her own. The issue is that she lives in the south of Spain, and I don't think that most apple varieties would do well there given the mild and short winter.

Can anyone recommend some low chill apple varieties that might do well (with watering) in the south of Spain? She likes sharp, acid apples. Googling doesn't seem to produce information about the chilling hours for most varieties.

Fuji is a well known low chill cultivar and if you have dig around on here you may find some that suit what you want.

Generally though, I think, low-chill apples are more common in places like California and Australia, which may mean particular varieties are difficult to get hold of. However I did get a Fuji tree from Keepers last year who supplied great quality trees.

How about Braeburn? It's a NZ variety so will be low chill, but the trees seem to be widely available in the UK. NZ North Island is on a similar latitude to the south of Spain - the summers in Spain are hotter but I think winter temps would be pretty similar. Kidd's Orange Red is another NZ apple that might be suitable.

There's a fantastic Australian cooker called Ballarat but I haven't seen it for sale here. Granny Smith might work in Spain too.
