Growing Blackcurrents in tubs ?

Has anyone grown Blackcurrents in tubs, if you have what size did you use and were you happy with the results ? Need to get some going this Autumn and will not have time to clear a spot in the garden, any info much appreciated, thanks.

I grow mine in the ground but there are a few peeps that grow in tubs so they may well be along soon.
I think they will be fine in tubs, especially if they are young plants. You can put them in the ground when you have cleared it. As for tub size, the bigger the better in my opinion. I would go bigger that black flower buckets. My mum grows blueberries and they in in half barrel type tubs. She gets good crops from those.

Yes, I grow Blackcurrants in half barrels. They do quite well but need to be kept watered in the dry weather as they tend to dry out quickly.
I only use the barrels because I dont have enough space.

Thanks Scarlet, as it happens I have a water butt, I was sure I bought a lid for it but now I can't find the lid anywhere :roll: so I could cut that in half maybe :?: that would be quite big don't you think :?: Your Mum is one of few people who liek Blueberries they seem to be out of favour now but I like them too.

Thanks for that Bramble, we don't have much space either, there is a spot but right now it is occupied by some horrendous woody bush that previous owner left to grow and grow, I know I will not be able to remove the stumps before next spring, love blackcurrents so want to get planted now.

How big are these blackcurrant bushes? If you've just bought them , probably not very big yet.

I'd keep it as a water butt and put a wire grid over the top to stop the birds falling in. Those big flower pots from @sda are ideal for planting black currants long term but as VC has just pointed out if you are just keeping them in pots until you've got your ground ready they could be planted up in something much smaller.

As VC points out if they are young plants and you are going to plant them out then 10 to 12 litres will more than see you through winter and spring.

If you are to leave them longer than this I would gradually pot them on up to 25/30ltrs. Then once every 2 to 3 years re-pot them into fresh compost.

Thanks for that, I think I will take your advice and use a 10 or 12 litre pot. You see I suffer from a lifelong illness it's called 'INERTIA' and if I use the size you suggest there will be some incentive for me to sort out the spot where it can eventually live. It's a bit of a nightmare with huge old stump and other probs and I am not as young as I once was

If I use a much bigger pot and the bush does well it may end up there until I pop my clogs as they say

Why don't you just cover the ground with some card till Spring, it might make the weeds easier to dig out. Not sure with the stump but you can worry about that later good luck!
