watermelon help!

Well I have 4 watermelon plants growing on my windowsill now, they are sharing pots (2 plants per pot) the biggest one I have tied to a cane is about 1 foot high now. my question is, what should I do with them now? today I noticed they are developing little thin curly things and I was wondering maybe these were little things to help the plant climb up something?
does anyone have any advice for growing some watermelons? I have no idea what to do now lol.

I grow them until they have 5 pairs of leaves, then pinch out the top, this makes them grow lots of side shoots. It is these side shoots that produce the flowers, then when you have a female flower pollinatate it with a male flower. When a melon starts to grow pinch out the shoot 2 leaves beyond the fruit . I don't grow mine up a support, I grow them along the top of the greenhouse bench and sit an upturned plant pot under each fruit. This is a pic of Watermelon yellow baby. They hang onto anything they can with those thin curly things mine attatched its self to the grapevine.

I'm sorry to sound awfully dim, but what does "pinch out" mean?
the little baby melon is so cute lol. I'm growing mine indoors at the moment on the window sill so should I give it something to stick itself on to or should I just leave it tied to the cane? Thanks for the advice!

pinch out just means you take the tip off the shoot,the very end of the plant, then it will grow more shoots. It should be fine tied to a cane, but once you get fruit you will have to support the melon with a net. Your plants look really good. I am sure that little melon on mine has grown overnight. This is the first year i have tried watermelons I usually just grow ordinary melons.

I grew a watermelon last year when I got my greenhouse. Grew to about 3 1/2 inches across then plant died. Decided to take the fruit & cut to just see if would've been any good. Was a perfect but small water melon. I was so chuffed. This year isnt so successful (yet). I've got 1 watermelon growing in a cloche but I wanted more. Have 2 different melons but with all this weather I'm losing 3/4s of my squashes, melons, courgettes etc

I am also having trouble with my watermelons. It is the first year I have tried to plant them. They need lots more heat than normal melons and they do not like addition feeds but they love loads of water. I think the possible problem with watermelons this year is the cool weather. Bob Flowerdew says not to take out the end shoots but I am considering it to increase showing of female flowers.
