  • Best secateurs for pruning.

My old faithful secateurs are now beyond repair and I need to get a new pair. I have found a few with good discounts here but which are best? Opinions on best brand, type etc?

Felco are well worth the money. They can also be serviced by Felco to keep them in tip top condition.

We have two original Felcos dating from the 1970s. One was re-bladed by Felco (a broken blade) and one has the original blade. Both are sharpened by hand. On one, the plastic on the handle has torn but it is still perfectly serviceable.

Still work perfectly. I service them myself being very mean :-)

I've got two pairs of Joseph Bentleys both bought as presents that I'm happy with them.

I have a set of felco and a set of pradines.they are both very good. The pradines I've had for about 8 years, and still going strong. I've just done a gooooogle search for them. It came up with bahco pradines? They all look different now. So don't know if they are as good. I went for both the felco & pradines because they do left handed versions.

I bought some aluminium secateurs. This felt really strange, because aluminium is a really soft metal, but they came with a warranty. They broke. The seller replaced them. I tried to be more careful. They still broke as well. Then I bought steel secateurs, Felco 5. They are great.

Felco every time, they work so well and last for decades.
As you can replace all the parts, I suppose they could last forever!

I've got about 6 different pairs in all sorts of places (1in each greenhouse,1 in the shed, 1 at our field and one in my porch for when I go out wandering in the garden), I don't know what make they all are but as long they're serviced and put back together properly they all seem fine.

However when doing my Horticulture course I used some felco swivel handle secateurs which felt really nice, but as they were about £60 when I last looked a pair of those will have to wait!!

Felco are great. The only downside of my pair is it turns out they also easily prune fingers as well. I went most of the way through one of mine a few years ago and since then I've been much more careful...

Having started with cheap and breakable. I inherited a good pair, and much preferred them. I now have Felc0 2's and wouldn't use anything else. You can even get spare parts for them, so you can fit new blades, springs, etc.

I bought a pair for my gardening buddy, as she kept breaking her cheapies, and she can't believe how easy they are to use, after the cr*p ones.

They are much cheaper on the 'Bay than they are in the shops.

                              Treat yourself!

(Reading back, it sounds like we all work for Felc0! LOL)
