Exotic fruits that can be grown anywhere in the uk, ideas :)

Does anyone know of any exotic fruits that can be grown in the uk, in the garden.

I know there is kiwi "jenny" that can be grown on a south facing wall but what else?

Depends what you mean by exotic. You can grow Passion Fruit in the UK - I suppose that's pretty exotic

Is it just the one specie that can be eaten?

Edit, yeah just searched, its Passiflora edulis that is the sweetest to eat where the other ones just taste wooly apparently? (Trust me to have caerulea) haha

Also depends on where you plan to grow it i.e garden, greenhouse, heated greenhouse. I am sure someone on here has grown pineapple. There is also cape gooseberry, pepino and kiwano.

I think of "exotic" fruits as those that grow in the tropics - like bananas, mangoes, papaya etc and would need year round cossetting.
Peaches, nectarines, kiwis will grow here provided you don't have a hard winter.

If you have a south or south-west facing wall then you can grow figs, and no problems about pollination as you have with apricots and peaches. Given a sunny spot you can grow Quince and Mulberry [latter do take some time to fruit]. As an alternative to Loganberries and Blackberries you could grow the californian Boysenberry.

In a sunny place in the South, japanese plums are lovely. One of many fruits that are transformed when home grown, the Satsuma plum tree I have is in flower now and will be till May, and the delicious fruit will stay on the tree for weeks when ripe so you can pick a dishful a day.

If exotic means just not commonly grown / sold in this country any more, then medlars also qualify. They taste good, too.

In the garden not a lot, half the reason they are "exotic" is that they cannot be grown in the UK outdoors. If they could someone would be doing it.

One that is not exotic I suppose is the Asian Pear. Grow fine here in the UK and tree can get to a fair size. Fruit is "odd", you need to pick it when still firm. If at all soft then they lose their taste and are bland.

I've had success with feijoa, or pineapple guava as they're often called here. You need a good summer to get fruit but even if you don't the plants are attractive, and quite winter hardy. I'm also growing a pomegranate, it's a healthy looking bush but still a baby and hasn't flowered or fruited yet. Figs are worth trying too. This year I'll be having a go at passion fruit and tamarillo from seed.
