  • Kiwis leafing out

I have a few young Actinidia Kolomikta vines, and I've noticed over the last couple of weeks that the buds as swelling and some are even starting to open (you can see the odd bit of leaf poking out in places). This is not good since kiwis are very frost sensitive once they start growing... but normally that doesn't happen in February. The colder temperatures of the last few days will hopefully shock them and slow things down a bit.

Has anyone else with normal and/or hardy kiwis noticed signs of activity?

Both my male and female kiwis have new leaves.

My plants are still small, so I hope their new growth this year doesn't get set back too much by frost. They got hit badly last year, and this year they're starting to leaf out even earlier.

I know kiwis tend to turn into monsters eventually, but mine haven't managed it yet and it would be nice if they could be a bit more enthusiastic about covering the pergola I'm growing them up.

Mine are about 120 cm high and putting out leaves in several places. The female plant is in the ground but the male is still in a large container as I haven't yet decided where to plant it. I don't know if it should be planted right next to the female where I have room and can fix support against the wall or if it should be a distance away.
