  • Fruit tree staking query

Quick question: When can I safely remove the stake from my MM106 apple tree? Official guidance says after 5 years - the tree is 5 years old but has only been in the ground for 2 years (planted winter 13/14), however it feels pretty solid and the trunk is now thicker than the stake. Cheers

Unless the tree is planted in an extremely exposed site, or one prone to act like a wind tunnel, I'd remove the stake. MM106 stocks produce pretty chunky root systems compared with M26 or M9 in my experience. And some authorities are advising against staking altogether these days.

Thanks, boundtothesoil. I have neither issue so out it comes.

I think its when the tree is holding the stake up.
