My damson had lots of leaf curl last year. No aphids were visible inside the curled leaves. What should I spray the tree with try to avoid this this year? Also, when should I spray?

As a plum is a member of the peach family I assume the cause and treatment is the same as peach leaf curl.
Standard recommendation is a copper based spray, Bordeaux Mixture being the often quoted - however not sure if you can legally spray with that stuff now. Rules keep changing and I have a feeling they changed.
Someone will scream at me if you cannot, and if not I have no present idea of an alternative.
One thing said is that if you see it then it is too late to treat and prevent, more a rearguard action. Seems that spraying in Autumn then Spring is the best approach.
As it is a fungual cause then there is likely a systemic fungicide out there. Assuming you want to use one.

Leaves curl on plum trees due to aphid damage. This can be before the leaves have opened and the damage is only apparent after the leaves open, and the aphids have wandered of to suck the juice out of something younger and more juicy. Some of the leaves on my plum curl every year but as it is quite a big tree now it isn't significant. On a small tree you could just rub the aphids off, but it is only really a cosmetic problem. Peach leaf curl is a fungal disease and much more serious as this causes the leaves to fall and ultimately weakens the tree.
