  • fruit trees in pots

I have got a couple of fruit trees on m27 rootstocks what's the best size pot to use when planting them up ???

I have some 50cm diameter and 64 litre ones that I use for potato's, looking at them the 50cm diameter may be just about OK but the 64 litre capacity looks too little for a fruit tree.

I would have said half as much depth again, making something in the area of 100 litres.

That makes the 100 litre, 510mm tall one the option I would realistically consider. Must go look up the size an M27 grows to. Is it 6ft ???

You want something big as the pot is in effect the universe to the plant, all water and nutrients and whatever have to be in the pot, and one often forgotten aspect is that the pot has to contain space for the tree to develop.

Part of the catch is that bigger will always be better so expect suggestions of up to the biggest that is available.

    Then comes filling it.
