  • scion/ soft fruit swap/ circle interest

I think this has been tried on the vine before and I have tried elsewhere with little success, but I shall at least ask

Are there any grapes that would be interested in a scion and/ or soft fruit swap?

At this stage I have no idea how it would work so feel free to make suggestions, but I think the important think is getting interested peeps

I am feeling really guilty now, I never thought of a swap, I used 9 scions from my egremont russet apple tree onto my butchered braeburn(it had canker high up the stem so I lopped it at 6-8ins) and threw another 10-12 away, It didn't dawn on me to offer them out on this site. I was so pleased to be able to get them done I chucked all the left over bits in the bin and got back indoors before the chilly winds came back to freeze me. I did give a load of polka/joan j offshoots to someone trying to start out so my brain might be working some of the time....

Don't feel guilty. I was thinking next year as most of my stuff has now gone or been earmarked

Although I am jealous. I fancied a russet and out of 3 peoples trees I had earmarked, all 3 suffered disease last year so wasn't able to do any

my russet came as part of a cheap deal which meant it cost me about £3 so that's about the price of a couple of bags of supermarket apples, hopefully the grafts will take, (one of them at least, please god) and I will get more of my favourites.......ooooohhhhh happy days..

I would be interested if it was for next year!

Looking at the old thread it seems it got pretty complicated though!

              Count me in too.

However I am more interested in soft fruit swapping than top fruit but by next year I may have a dabble at grafting a few apples.

              Cheers
              Steve

I'd be interested in a soft fruit swap. When you say next year, do you mean to take cuttings this summer and swap rooted cuttings next winter? I could take blackcurrant cuttings and dig up autumn raspberry canes. I could also take top fruit cuttings, but don't want any.

^^^I was just thinking what ever people can spare whether it was rooted or not.

For me, either rooted cutting or prunings work great. I hate throwing good prunings away and usually stick them in pots. I then use them for "swaps" or just give them away. At this time of year most have gone to new homes but I have the following rooted cuttings spare & waiting to go:-

                          Gooseberry - May Duke
                          Gooseberry - Golden Drop
                          Gooseberry - Hedgehog
                          Red Currant - Red Lake
                          Blackberry - Prime Ark 24
                          Gooseberry - Hinnonmaki Red
                          Jostaberry
                          Black Currant - Titania
                          Black Currant - Ben Nevis
                          Goji Berry

                          All are chemical free!

I will have these and some other varieties after the next autumn pruning session.

                          I am looking for:-

                          Gooseberry - Lord Derby
                          Gooseberry - Woodpecker
                          Gooseberry - Surprise

Blueberries & Gooseberries are becoming my passion but I would consider any old/heritage varieties W.H.Y.
