  • Seed prices.

Well.. You may say this serves me right for buying into it...literally.
However. I tried my 3 nearest garden centres for Cape gooseberry seeds. Got some last year no bother. This year none to be had ..that is until I was in desperation lured into buying James Wong seeds. Last year I compared his seeds under Suttons name to to what I'm sure were also Suttons standard pack and many more seeds. Now I know we all moan about too many seeds in a pack for too much money. But for the privilege of having
James Wongs picture on the fancy packet along with some unecessary blurb in the form of a recipe I paid £2.49 for 11 seeds !! not much wiggle room for poor germination either. I'm sure last year even there were more seeds in the packet. They are nothing special and easy to grow by his own admission. I only bought these as it takes a long time for them to germinate grow and fruit so I needed really to have started in Feb. Plus any more car journeys further afield just for these seeds would make cost a nonsense. I could stomach a few more pence for a "face" endorsement on an item bit this is daylight robbery. I'm afraid the likes of Sarah Raven are much the same. So whilst in this instance I just wanted to get the seeds in I shan't be putting more pounds into so called celebrity( gross word at the best of times ) coffers. Oh and to add insult to injury Mr Wongs seeds are not called Cape Gooseberry....oh no, they are INCA BERRIES! Pretentious Moi?

You did well there I seem to recall a few years back there was a thread that talked a lot about his seeds, IIRC zaz' had an empty packet & after complaining was given a packet with less than ten seeds in

There's a couple of ripe ones in the GH at the moment. Ate some last week
These plants are a couple of years old now.

I bought some seeds, along with toms and peppers this year. The toms have germinated but no sign of the physalis? Are they normally slow to germinate?

That's daylight robbery! Just checked last year's Chilterns "Giant" pack, still has 20+ left and it was £2.10.
Tuckers do bog standard ones £1.80 for 200!

Wong's Asparagus Pea seeds are £2.49 for 30. Tuckers do 100 for £1.90!

Moreveg have Cape Gooseberry's at 10 seeds for 50p - not necessarily worth it for a single item as they also have a postage charge and for one seed variety the postage exceeds the seed cost. Think the postage is £1:50 +-25p for whatever you get.

But if you wanted a few other things at the same time then getting say 4 or 5 types of seed spreads the cost out across them. I need 2 or 3 additional items from them.

Hve you tried somewhere like Wilkinsons ? Assumes there is one around.

I've found them very slow to germinate Snadger. That's why I wanted to get on with it.
I was really highlighting this rediculous practise of paying a premium for a--so called--celeb face on an item! I try never to buy into it. In fact it puts me off the purchase.
I vividly recall Jamie Oliver years ago saying in an interview that he'd never do this endorsement of
goods thing, noooo not him. Now his face is slapped on every item imaginable in the cooking and vaguely cooking related world. Sad but money talks.
I discovered the other day I have a punnet of picked fruits in the greenhouse from last year! Not ripe enough for use but I now have extra seeds.

I looked in the local Wilkos today and they sell packets of 100 cape gooseberry seeds.
